MA/MAT English Dual Degree Graduate Application Process
Required Materials

$50 non-refundable application fee

Official transcript from all institutions, documenting an undergraduate cumulative G.P.A. of at least 2.75 overall and 3.0 in the major field of study.

A course in adolescent psychology (undergraduate or graduate)

If you attended an institution outside of the United States, a transcript evaluation from one of our approved agencies is required.

If your undergraduate final grade point average falls below the minimum stated, please contact Graduate Admissions.

Two references; from persons able to speak to your academic qualifications and performance.

Statement of purpose (500- to 1,000 words, double-spaced) addressing the following:

Your interest in teaching English at the secondary level (grades 5-12)

Your interest in studying English at the graduate level (ie, how you see yourself as a scholar of English)

Writing sample between 6-12 pages

Literary studies applicants should submit an analytical writing sample

Writing applicants should submit a creative writing sample

English Proficiency, if applicable for international applicants
If you already hold an initial license, please apply directly to the MA English. A MAT is not required if the initial license has been obtained.
If you already hold a BA in English and are only seeking licensure to teach English in grades 5-12, please apply to the MAT in English.

The master of arts/master of arts in teaching English program does support international students in F or J status (as of the 2025-2026 academic year). Please contact the Center for International Education with any questions.
