Delving Deeply: Artistic Development Grants Open Doors for S

Senior Emily Kwong's art is springing up all over the North Shore! Emily, a Peabody native, has been on campus all summer working on her Honors in Art exhibit for the Winfisky Gallery, set to open this spring. She's hoping to complete a dozen large-scale pieces for the exhibit.
In addition to her exhibit work, Emily has also contributed to community art projects on the North Shore. Her painted piano for the Play Us a Tune program in downtown Peabody and a utility box in downtown Salem were both on display this year.
"The art faculty really helped me figure out what I really wanted to do," Emily said. "They encourage me to push my boundaries, and I can go to any one of them for help or advice."
Emily is one of four students to receive a 2017 Student Artistic Development Grant from the Salem State Center for Creative and Performing Arts. These donor-supported grants provide an opportunity for students in the arts to spend the summer working intensively at their craft.
This year’s other recipients included Jen Yao who spent a week studying glassblowing at the Corning Museum of Glass, Jessica Tower who attended writing retreats and is now submitting the product of those retreats to over a dozen publications, and Tom Laaser, founder of Salem State's veteran’s writers group who attended the Joiner Institute’s Veterans Writers Workshop.
