First Year Student Orientation

Incoming first-year students (freshmen) will select their first year seminar (required fall course) in Navigator after they select their orientation session beginning Monday, March 3, 2025.  Students will review all the seminar options before selecting the one they are most interested in. Students may return to the Orientation tile in Navigator up until May 27, 2025 to change their selection from what is available at that time.

Seats are limited in each course, so students are encouraged to make their selection early. Students can review the list of seminars and descriptions online (in a single PDF) before making their selection. First Year Experience is hosting a number of information sessions online to answer questions.

The deadline to select a first year seminar is Tuesday, May 27, 2025. Students who do not select by that date will pick their seminar at orientation from what seats remain. It is highly recommend that students select early.

Once you pay your enrollment deposit and sign up for orientation, you can access your Salem State email. To log in, you should use the same username and password as your Navigator account. All orientation details are sent to your Salem State email address within 72 hours of signing up.

Email is the official method of communication at Salem State. We recommend you check your account regularly to ensure you don't miss anything.

All new students are required to complete an online orientation course on Canvas, Salem State University’s online learning platform, before attending their in-person orientation. This module will introduce key information about university resources, academic life, support services, and co-curricular opportunities.

The orientation course will go live on March 31, 2025, and will be available on your Canvas homepage upon logging in. Please allow up to 48 hours after registering for orientation for the course to appear.

If the orientation course is not visible on your Canvas homepage after May 31 or at least 48 hours after registering, please contact orientation@salemstate.edu for assistance.

Before you start classes at Salem State University, you need to make sure the health insurance requirements are met, and health information forms are on file with the counseling and health services office. You can upload your immunization information on our health services portal, located in Navigator, or if you prefer, mail/fax to our office.
