Apply to the Community of Inclusive Scholars

Eligibility

Students eligible to join the Community of Inclusive Scholars are those with severe disabilities, including intellectual disabilities, developmental disabilities, and autism. They have a range of IQ scores.

CIS students are most successful when participation in the dream of the student, not only the parent.

Academic Skills

  • A basic mathematical understanding and ability to use a calculator
  • Some reading/written language ability
  • A means of independent communication
  • Demonstrated ability to access accommodations/other instructional supports in a high school general education

Independent Skills

  • Demonstrated the ability to function independently for sustained periods of time.
  • Can handle changes in routine; can be flexible in unstructured situations.
  • Emotional maturity.
  • Can utilize supports independently

Behavior

  • Seeks social age opportunities
  • Does not require behavioral supports/plan for inclusion in the general education environment

How to Apply

Partnership Program Admissions

Parents need to contact their child’s school district to inquire about the district requesting an application.

Horizons Program Admissions

Parents can request an application directly via cis@salemstate.edu.

Program Fees

Salem State University funds tuition for Community of Inclusive Scholars students. Grants help to cover the costs of student fees, textbooks, course materials, and other costs. Participation fees from families help to cover coaching, mentoring, seminars and other costs.

 

Fees from FY26:
Fees are subject to change for FY27. Students may be eligible for funding through a MAIPSE grant.

  • Partnership Program Fee: $7,400/year

  • Horizons Program Fee: $22,000/year

  • Residence Life: $22,000/year 

Application Dates

  • Applications open in late January and are typically due in March or April. Official deadlines will be posted as available.

Documentation Requirements

  • Most recent IEP
  • Testing conducted within the past three years, including academic and cognitive assessments
  • Transition assessment if completed
  • Letters of recommendation
  • High school transcript
  • Once the application is reviewed, an interview is scheduled, which includes the student attending an SSU class
  • When possible, an observation of the student in their current program
  • If applying under “Partnership,” a completed MOA between the district and CIS is required
  • If agency-eligible, provide the agency name and case manager
