Graduate Certificate in Bilingual Education

Are you an educator with an initial or professional license who wants to teach academic content in a dual-language or bilingual setting?  

The Graduate Certificate in Bilingual Education at Salem State is designed to meet the requirements for PreK through 12 teachers who wish to earn the DESE Bilingual Education Endorsement. The program provides a strong grounding in the research and practices to teach emerging bilingual students, including foundations of programming, language acquisition and biliteracy development, and the multicultural facets of teaching students and interacting with parents and the community.

Program Features

  • Modality: Synchronous and asynchronous online courses, plus district-based programming (Contact Graduate Program Coordinator for more information on current partnerships). 

  • Faculty: Faculty teaching in the certificate courses are often practitioners with hands-on experience in bilingual teaching and programming. 

  • Concurrent Enrollment Opportunities: Graduate courses in the certificate may align with other graduate degrees (e.g., MAT in English to Speakers of Other Languages), allowing for credits to count toward the certificate and a master’s degree simultaneously. 

  • Graduate Assistantships: Apply for graduate assistantships, grants and scholarships to support you during your educational journey.

Curriculum

This certificate program includes a 4-course (12-credit) foundation sequence plus an additional 1-credit practicum course with a 75-hour field experience in a bilingual school setting such as a transitional bilingual, two-way immersion or other bilingual school setting.

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that Elementary and Secondary School Teachers in the Boston-Cambridge-Newton region earn an average annual salary of $85,910 and $88,890, respectively, as of May 2024.
