International Orientation

The Center for International Education (CIE) coordinates and implements an additional orientation to the general academic orientation for all incoming international students. The international student orientation provides international students with tools to assimilate into the US environment and immigration rules relevant to their legal status in the US and Salem State policies. Students MUST attend both orientations, the general academic orientation, and the international orientation.

1. General orientation: Register now for through your Navigator account.
2. International Orientation: Will take place in person on Wednesday, January 14 and Friday, January 16, 2026, 9am – 5pm, North Campus, Sullivan Building 111. Contact the Center for International Education with any questions at cie@salemstate.edu 978-542-6351.

International Orientation Information

This orientation is mandatory for all international students who will be taking credit classes. The following topics are discussed:

1. Immigration: new regulations, working on and off campus, getting social security numbers and a driver’s license, and how to maintain your immigration status
2. The U.S. educational system: and the new general education curriculum at Salem State
3. Cross-cultural communication and relationships: culture shock, American values, stereotypes, and intercultural communications
4. Campus resources: you will meet representatives from many departments on campus, learn about their functions and learn how these departments can ease your transition to the university. Information will include health/health insurance, safety/campus parking, financial and tuition payment systems.
5. Email: set-up, campus tours, ClipperCard (student ID)
6. Banking: Staff will help you to open a bank account, and can also direct you where to go shopping for items you need upon arrival.

Resident Students

These items are required before you can move into the residence hall:

1. Pay your balance in full or be on an approved payment plan and/or have sufficient financial aid to cover your balance (includes completing all aid-related items on your to-do list on your Navigator account).
2. Submit a fully completed immunization form to Counseling and Health Services. Access the requirements and forms here. Make sure the documentation has been received by checking the student health portal.
3. The health care system in the United States is probably very different from what you have experienced in your own country and can be challenging to understand. Counseling and health services is here to assist you with illnesses, injuries, and maintaining and improving your health and well-being.
