Scholarship Information.
Are you interested in gaining first-hand experience with state policy making in Massachusetts?
Politics, Policy and International Relations awards an $1800 stipend to support a political science major or minor who intern in the Massachusetts State House, which includes the offices of state senators, state representatives, state legislative committees, and state executives.
Award Requirements
- Political Science majors or minors in Political Science, Public Policy and Public Administration, or International Relations and have a minimum GPA of 3.0
- Secured an internship in the office of a state legislator, state legislative committee, or other office within the Massachusetts State House
- Received approval for at least 3 academic credits for the internship
- The successful applicant agrees to discuss their internship experience with other students formally and informally. Preference will be given to political science majors who will be returning to SSU in Fall 2026.
Selection Process
- To receive the award, the recipient must apply directly to State House offices and obtain the internship.
- Application for the Andrea Crupi Costa ’01 Internship Award should be submitted by email to Professor Jackman at jjackman@salemstate.edu by December 15 for spring semester, May 1 for summer semester and September 1 for fall Semester.
- Each applicant will be interviewed by Political Science faculty.
- Finalists will be interviewed by the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.

- Goal statement (100-200 words) outlining what you hope to gain through the experience
- Cover letter
- Resume
- Writing sample (3-5 pages)
- At least two letters of reference
Massachusetts State House Internships
Intern responsibilities vary in each Massachusetts State House office, but usually include research, writing and editing; attending hearings and briefings; carrying out projects in specific issue areas; performing a variety of administrative tasks; and fielding calls from and assisting constituents and visitors.
