What made you choose Salem State, and what is one thing a prospective student should know about our campus community?
Being accepted into Salem State was a turning point for me. My high school GPA and academic experience were not the strongest, especially given the impact of COVID-19 on my learning. At the time, I did not view education as a true necessity. That perspective has completely changed. My time here has allowed me to grow not only academically, but also personally. I have become more knowledgeable, more disciplined and more aware of my potential. College has given me the space to discover parts of myself I never knew existed, from my leadership abilities to my passion for making an impact in my community. What once felt like an opportunity I was not fully prepared for has become the foundation for who I am becoming.
Once you got to campus, what made you say, "This is the place for me?"
When I first came to campus, I had a completely different mindset. I told myself I was going to keep my head down, avoid distractions and spend four years focused only on earning my degree. I did not plan to build friendships or form meaningful relationships. But I was wrong. It was not just the academics that shaped my experience at Salem State. It was the people. The connections I built, the conversations I had and the community I found completely changed my perspective. They made me feel like I belonged in a way I had not expected. The people here showed me that growth does not happen in isolation. It happens through shared experiences, support and genuine connection. Without that community, my journey would not have the same meaning. They are a big part of why Salem State feels like home.
What made you choose your major? What about your area of study ignites your passion?
My major allows me to think critically, work strategically and apply what I learn to real situations. What excites me most is the ability to use those skills in ways that can make a meaningful impact on people's lives and communities.
Do you live on campus or commute? If you live on campus, what have you enjoyed most about your experience? If you commute, how have you stayed engaged with the campus community?
Living on campus played a major role in helping me feel connected to Salem State. Being here every day made the campus feel like more than just a place I attended. It became part of my daily life. Because of that, getting involved felt natural. Attending events, engaging with the community and being on time for classes became easier and more consistent. Proximity created opportunity, and over time, that consistency helped me build stronger habits and deeper connections. Living on campus did not just make things more convenient. It made me more present, more engaged and more invested in my college experience.
How have you grown as a person during your college experience?
Throughout my college experience, I have grown into the person I once needed myself to be. As a Black student, I have come to recognize that we do not always see or openly discuss role models who have excelled academically, and that absence shaped how I viewed myself coming in. At first, I did not see myself as a leader, and I did not feel a strong sense of purpose beyond earning my degree to make my mother proud. Over time, that mindset began to shift. I started to realize that my journey was about more than just me. I have stepped into spaces and taken on roles I never imagined for myself. Through those experiences, I found purpose in being an example, in creating space for others and in becoming someone who can inspire and uplift those who come after me.
Can you describe a challenge that you overcame at Salem State?
I came into college fully motivated and started off strong. However, after suffering a hip injury that required surgery during my sophomore year, I lost that sense of momentum. The recovery process took a toll on me mentally, and it carried into the following year. During that time, I found myself on academic probation, and my financial aid was put at serious risk. It was a difficult period that forced me to reflect on my priorities and my resilience. I decided to turn things around. I retook courses I had struggled in and replaced those grades with stronger performances. Through discipline and consistency, I rebuilt my academic standing and raised my GPA to well above 3.0. That experience taught me how to push through adversity and reinforced my commitment to my education.
Could you discuss the relationships you've developed with faculty members and how these relationships have influenced your learning and personal growth?
I highly recommend leaning on faculty members and building strong relationships with them because they can play a key role in your growth and will invest in your success. Everyone around me has made me feel that there is nothing I cannot accomplish, and that the only person holding me back is myself. I have learned to replace negative thoughts with positive reinforcement, using challenges as fuel to keep moving forward.
Can you describe the educational value and affordability you've experienced at Salem State University? How has the university supported your academic journey regarding quality and accessibility?
Salem State University has provided me with a high-quality education that is both valuable and accessible. The academic programs are rigorous and engaging, giving me the opportunity to explore subjects I never knew I was passionate about and to develop skills that will serve me well beyond college. Despite challenges in my high school background, the university has made learning approachable through supportive faculty, resources and a community that encourages growth. Affordability has also been a key factor in my experience. Financial aid and scholarship opportunities have helped me stay focused on my studies without being overwhelmed by financial pressures, even during difficult times, such as when I faced academic probation after my hip surgery. This support ensured that I could continue pursuing my degree without sacrificing quality or access to important resources. Overall, Salem State has provided a balanced experience of educational excellence and financial accessibility, allowing me to thrive academically, build confidence in my abilities, and prepare for a meaningful future.
Salem State emphasizes hands-on learning experiences. Can you share any memorable experiences where you've applied classroom knowledge in real-world settings or through projects?
One of the most impactful hands-on experiences I have had at Salem State was through collaborative projects and campus initiatives that required applying classroom knowledge to real situations. In my business courses, I worked on projects that involved analyzing financial data and creating actionable recommendations, which gave me insight into how theories and formulas translate into real-world decision-making. Outside the classroom, my involvement in student organizations like The Brotherhood allowed me to put leadership, communication and organizational skills into practice. Planning events, leading discussions and facilitating workshops required me to use problem-solving skills I had learned in class while also adapting to real-time challenges. These experiences reinforced that education at Salem State goes beyond lectures. It prepares you to think critically, act decisively and make an impact in tangible ways.
What are your post-graduation plans, and how do you believe your time at Salem State has equipped you for success in pursuing these plans?
Even though we are currently facing one of the toughest job markets in history, my plan is to pursue a career in government and become an advocate for the people. I believe my skill set, which includes community organizing, public speaking, event planning and analytical thinking, positions me to thrive in any role I choose. It is not a matter of capability but of finding the right opportunities to showcase my abilities and make an impact. I am confident that with dedication and persistence, I can use my talents to serve others and create meaningful change in my community.
