Salem State Wins Leading by Example Award for Energy, Environmental Work

Orange is the New Green

The Commonwealth of Massachusetts recognized Salem State University for "outstanding clean energy and environmental efforts" in a ceremony at the State House on December 6, 2018. The annual Leading by Example awards recognized eight state agencies, public universities, municipalities and individuals for leadership in developing programs that reduce environmental impacts.

Highlights of Salem State's sustainability initiatives include two rooftop solar arrays (soon to be five), five campus buildings certified to the LEED sustainability standard, energy efficiency improvements, a thriving Zagster bike share program, award-winning composting at the dining halls, and greater than 20 percent reductions in water and fleet gasoline usage. Strong academic offerings, a robust Earth Week program, and engaged students, faculty, and staff support the operational initiatives.
