October is LGBTQ+ History Month, a time to recognize and celebrate the histories, contributions, resilience, and lived experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual, and other LGBTQIA+ communities. Established in 1994 by educator Rodney Wilson and fellow educators and community leaders, LGBTQ+ History Month highlights the people, movements, and milestones that have shaped LGBTQ+ history and continue to influence our world today.
At Salem State University, LGBTQ+ History Month is also an opportunity to reflect on how we foster a campus culture where LGBTQ+ students, faculty, and staff feel seen, affirmed, respected, and supported. Through education, community-building, and intentional inclusion, we can honor the legacies of those who came before us while continuing to create spaces where everyone can thrive.
