Sep 8, 2025

We asked Ike Oranekwu ’25, who comes to Salem State from Lynn, Massachusetts, about his experience in the Salem State School of Nursing.

Why did you decide to study nursing at Salem State?

The reason I chose Salem State to study nursing is that I felt that it offered the best opportunities for me to develop the skills I would need in the nursing world. Also, I work as a PCA at home for my siblings. So, the skills that I use to take care of them, I can use them to take care of the patients in the hospital. Furthermore, it does help that it has a good reputation with students.

What has been your favorite nursing course at Salem State so far? Who taught it?

So far, I would have to say it’s either Fundamentals or Maternity. For my Fundamentals course, Amy taught it to me. She is really a good teacher and knows what she teaches. I was able to understand the materials that she taught, and she made class so much fun. For Maternity, Leocayda was so much fun. Her classes were enjoyable, and she really helped me with the material when I was struggling.

What kind of nursing care do you plan to pursue? Is there a nursing specialty you are interested in?

Honestly, that’s something I’m still not sure of. However, I have been thinking of becoming a public health nurse or maternity nurse. I feel like I’m more suitable for those two specialties.

Describe your experience at Salem State's in the School of Nursing. In what ways have your courses prepared you to be a nurse?

Well, my experience is that it’s been a roller coaster of a ride. The courses that I took made me more attentive to the situations that could occur in a hospital. Also, it prepared me to have better communication skills when reporting to others. Furthermore, it has given me insight into what to do when I’m taking care of a patient. The professors always made sure to tell us that the stuff that we learn in the courses, we’re going to apply those skills in the real world.

What do you like most about studying nursing at Salem State?

Honestly, just being able to help others understand the material and also get help from them as well. Sometimes, studying by myself has done me good, but whenever I would be in a study group with friends or classmates, I loved it because we were able to connect and help each other with stuff that we didn’t understand or needed more explanation on.

What do you love most about nursing in general?

Just being able to connect to others and make their lives better. I work as a PCA at home for my siblings. Being able to take care of them has given me insight into how nursing could help those who really need it.

What advice would you give to future nursing students?

Well, to all future nursing students, nursing school can be very overwhelming at times. Admittedly, there were times when I wanted to give up and move on to a different career. But I was about to pick myself up and keep pushing forward. Just try to be organized, maintain a good schedule with yourself, and please develop good study skills. It will help you in the long run. Build friendships along the way! They will always put you on the right track with studying. Furthermore, go ask your professors for help!!!! If you don’t understand something or you’re struggling, go to the professor and they will always be there to help you! Lastly, don’t ever slack off or get too comfortable. Always try to be productive because this is a career that should be taken seriously and must be treated as such. Try to stay on top of your work! Anyway, just take my advice and you future nursing students will be nurses in time!! Y’all got this!!
