Salem State Nominated for Resiliency and Sustainability Award

The City of Salem Chamber of Commerce is highlighting the achievements of local businesses and organizations through its “Celebrate Salem Awards.” Salem State University is honored to have been nominated, along with five worthy local organizations, in the Resiliency and Sustainability category.  Winners in each category are chosen by a general vote (one vote per person) at this link. Please vote by the April 10th deadline.

Winners will be honored at the “Celebrate Salem Awards” event on May 3rd at the Peabody Essex Museum.

  • Geothermal system at the Berry Library
  • Six rooftop solar arrays with almost 1 MW of capacity
  • Decarbonization plan, with implementation planning underway, for North Campus
  • Recent significant energy efficiency projects addressing heating, cooling and lighting
  • Five LEED certified buildings
  • Green transportation options including participation in the Bluebike Bike Share program, Salem Skipper subsidies for students, and 23 parking spots with EV charging
  • Waste minimization efforts including Freecycle tables in all Residence Halls and 34 water bottle refill stations; recycled more than 40,000 pounds of textiles since 2019
  • 30+ sustainability courses across the curriculum and related faculty research
  • Vibrant Earth Days programming reaching hundreds of students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community members
  • Composting at dining halls and pilot compost program at one Residence Hall
  • Stewardship of nine-acre salt marsh, green roof on nearby building
  • Recent award of water efficiency pro-bono consulting services
