As you prepare for the upcoming job and internship fair on March 5, let’s look at how to prepare your elevator pitch and introduction.
Here are some things to keep in mind when crafting your elevator pitch:
• Know your audience: What does the company value? What are they looking for?
• Know what you are looking for: Do you want to develop a skill, enter a career path, or expand your experience?
• Know what makes you an asset: What do you bring to the workplace? Are you a team player, a quick learner, or do you have great experience in the field?
Here are a few templates to get you thinking about your elevator pitch:
- “Hello, my name is _____, and I am completing a _____ degree in _____ at Salem State University. I am interested in a career in _____ in the _____ field (industry).”
- “Hi, I’m [Name], a [year/major] at Salem State. I’m interested in [field/role], and I’ve been building experience through [internships, projects, campus job, leadership role]. I’m especially drawn to [company/industry] because [specific reason], and I’d love to learn more about opportunities where I can [skill you want to use or grow].”
- “Hi, I’m [Name], a [major/year] at [University]. I’m really passionate about [cause/area], and that’s shown up in my experience with [club, job, volunteer work, project]. I’m interested in roles where I can [impact you want to make], and I’d love to hear how your team approaches that.”
Remember, the introduction is about you, so adapt the above to fit your experience. Include your current position or title if you have one. You can also include any student organizations or sports you are involved in, or volunteer work you are proud of. You can even briefly share about an internship or role you had that you were passionate about or where you developed skills.
The goal is to keep your introduction to 60 seconds or less. Remember, you are just starting the conversation, so you do not need to be detailed. Let the details come naturally through conversation.
