Berry IOP Fellow: Alison King

Spring 2024

About Alison King

Alison King is an award-winning journalist with over 30 years of experience in the broadcasting industry. She spent most of her career covering politics in New England including leading the local, state and regional political coverage for NBC Boston/NECN from 1995 until her retirement from TV in April 2023. She utilized her role as a political reporter to hold politicians accountable and to shed light on a variety of social issues in New England. She has covered seven presidential elections and interviewed every Republican and Democratic presidential candidate since 1996 including Joe Biden, Donald Trump, Barack Obama, and Bill Clinton.

King has also reported and produced three documentaries, including one about the late Massachusetts Senator Ted Kennedy titled “Ted Kennedy: Last Liberal Standing” and one about former Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick titled “The Education of Deval Patrick.” Most recently, she executive produced and reported on an 11 part docu-series, “Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of New Hampshire,” which chronicles the Free State Project and the efforts by libertarians nationwide to settle in New Hampshire to create a libertarian Utopia.

She has won several awards for her reporting including 4 Emmys, 2 Gracies and 3 Associated Press awards. While King is known for being a tough and fair political reporter, she was also known for her yearly holiday tradition of bringing politicians together to sing classic holiday songs in a segment called Political Harmony. This spring, King will also be a Shorenstein Fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School. King received her Bachelor of Arts in English from Colgate University and a Master of Arts in Journalism from New York University.
