What made you choose Salem State?
When I was looking at colleges, cost and affordability played a huge role in my selection process, and Salem State did a great job of breaking down the costs and showing me ways I could afford to attend here. I was also really intrigued by the 4+1 education program since it has always been a goal of mine to get my master’s in education. With the 4+1 program, earning my master’s became much more attainable at a reasonable price.
What are three words you would use to describe the Viking community? Why?
Supportive, formative and inclusive. In my time at Salem State, I have had the opportunity to grow into a more confident and self-assured person in many ways. Through its resources and opportunities, Salem State has created a very inclusive and supportive environment for its students.
What is one thing you think a prospective student should know about Salem State?
One thing I would tell a prospective student about Salem State is the number of on-campus work opportunities available. If you are a prospective student interested in working on campus, there will be opportunities if you put yourself out there.
What have you done at Salem State that you are most proud of?
I am most proud of my ability to stay on top of my work as an admissions ambassador, resident assistant and education student in the 4+1 program. This is a broad statement, but I am just glad I can be here in Salem, work this hard, and be part of the Salem State community.
How would you describe the professors at Salem State?
The professors I have met are great at helping students through any academic worries. Most of the professors at Salem State are very committed to their students’ success and will continue working with them to ensure they can thrive in their learning environment.
What has been your favorite class to take?
My favorite class that I have taken so far has been an education course called Culturally Responsive Teaching. This course allowed my classmates and me to learn more about how to teach a class of students from diverse backgrounds, cultures, and identities. I think the main reason I enjoyed this class was the professor, who made it so engaging and entertaining.
What is your favorite place on campus?
My favorite place on campus is Berry Library. I love being able to use the study rooms, early education book collection and quiet study and work areas. I can’t even count the number of hours that I have spent working on anything and everything there.
What is your favorite memory at Salem State?
My favorite memories at Salem State have been the opportunities to get to know other students and grow through classes, experiences, and more.
Do you live in a residence hall or commute? What has been your favorite part about living on campus or commuting?
I live on campus in Forten Hall and am also a resident assistant there. I have really enjoyed meeting new people from various backgrounds and being immersed in the Salem community built in the residence halls.
How do you feel Salem State has helped you get career-ready?
As an education major, Salem State does a great job of incorporating internships and experience-based learning to prepare you for situations that will come up. Specifically, though, the 4+1 program and my advisors in the education department have really helped me understand what I am going to need to become a teacher in Massachusetts, especially since I am an out-of-state student. Whether that is tests to get my certification or earning my master’s degree, my advisors have been extremely helpful in understanding the process.
