What made you choose Salem State?
I chose Salem State University because of its great location near Boston, which offers many opportunities. I also found that both the students and faculty are very friendly and inclusive, which makes it easy for me, as an international student, to feel at home. The university offers a wide range of course options and various academic support resources, such as the Writing Center and peer tutoring, which help me stay on track even while learning in a non-native language.

What are three words you would use to describe the Viking community? Why?
Supportive, inclusive and welcoming. I chose supportive because Salem State offers many academic resources, such as the Writing Center and peer tutoring programs, which help students succeed and feel confident in their learning. I chose inclusive because many student organizations, such as the Asian Student Association and the International Student Association, regularly host events celebrating different cultures and perspectives, making students from diverse backgrounds feel seen and valued. I chose welcoming because orientation activities and events, such as the Center for International Education Coffee Hour, create opportunities for students to connect, build friendships, and feel genuinely welcomed into the campus community.

What is one thing you think a prospective student should know about Salem State?
One important thing prospective students should know about Salem State is that the university truly cares about student success. There are many academic and personal support resources available, and students are encouraged to ask for help and explore opportunities. This supportive environment makes it easier to grow, both academically and personally.

What have you done at Salem State that you are most proud of?
What I am most proud of is successfully adapting to academic life as an international student by studying in a non-native language while also learning an additional language. Through using resources such as the Writing Center, peer tutoring and communicating with professors, I have built confidence in my academic abilities and continued to grow both academically and personally.

How would you describe the professors at Salem State?
I would describe the professors at Salem State as supportive, approachable and dedicated. They are willing to listen to students, provide guidance and create an inclusive classroom environment. Many professors are understanding of different learning backgrounds and encourage students to participate, ask questions and grow academically.

What has been your favorite class to take?
My favorite class to take has been Spanish. The professor is patient, supportive, and friendly, and introduces cultural knowledge alongside the language itself. The course offers helpful practice materials, including exercises and video and audio resources, which make it easier to review and strengthen my learning after class. In addition, peer tutors are available to help students catch up, correct pronunciation, and ask questions, which has made the learning experience both effective and encouraging.

What is your favorite place on campus?
My favorite place on campus is Marsh Dining Hall. It is open from 6 am to 2 am, which makes it very convenient for students with different schedules. The dining hall offers a wide variety of buffet-style food, and the special midnight menu is especially enjoyable. After studying late, I truly appreciate finding a late-night meal on campus.

What is your favorite memory at Salem State?
My favorite memory at Salem State is celebrating the Lunar New Year with other students. Since it is a holiday like Christmas, I couldn’t be with my family, but I got to spend time with friends on campus. The event, organized by the International Student Association and the Asian Student Association, brought together people from different cultural backgrounds. Celebrating together made me feel happy, included and far from lonely.

Do you live in a residence hall or commute? What has been your favorite part about living on campus or commuting?
I live on campus in Atlantic Hall, which is an apartment-style residence. Each suite can accommodate six students and includes a shared kitchen. Living with friends, as I do, has given me many fun and memorable moments outside of class. During the cold, snowy days, it’s also very convenient to take the free campus shuttle, which runs every 20 minutes, to get to classes. Living on campus has made my student life both enjoyable and convenient.

How do you feel Salem State has helped you get career-ready?
Salem State has helped me prepare for my future career in many ways. Each student is assigned an academic advisor who not only helps plan courses for each semester but also cares about post-graduation plans. Additionally, there are courses specifically designed to develop career skills. For example, I took Writing in the Workplace, which taught me how to write resumes, professional emails and other workplace documents with proper etiquette. These resources have given me confidence and practical skills for my future career.
