Breaking Barriers: Promise Year Students on the Program That Changed Their Path
Higher education can feel out of reach for many students, especially those who face financial barriers, uncertainty about college, or come from minority group backgrounds. But at Salem State University, the Promise Year program is changing that narrative. I sat down with a few of my peers currently in the program to discuss their experiences and why they believe this initiative is making a difference.
Why did you join the Promise Year?
Jacqueline H.: “Even though I knew what I wanted to do with my future, I didn’t know how to get started or where to turn for guidance. I also knew I wouldn’t have financial support, which made everything feel even more uncertain. The Promise Year gave me the direction, resources, and encouragement I needed to take those first steps toward my dream career.”
Darian A.: “It was a great opportunity that lifted the financial burden off my shoulders as a first-generation Latina student. It also gave me the time and space to really reflect on my interests and think more deeply about the path I want to take.”
Kathia S.: “I didn’t know what I wanted to do or where I wanted to go after high school. I hoped it would give me a better understanding of what college is really like, and help me figure out what I want to do and who I want to become. And It did!”
How did the Promise Year benefit you?
Jacqueline H.“I was able to get the support I needed from my advisors, which helped me stay accountable and on top of things. I struggled in high school, but the Promise Year gave me the confidence and boost I needed. Now, I feel truly ready for college.”
Darian A. “by giving me the chance to attend a full year of college for free and earn credits at no cost. It also allowed me to experience what college is really like, both academically and personally, which helped me feel more confident and prepared for the future.”
Kathia S.“The Promise Year provided a lot of financial support, including free books, transportation, a meal plan, and even a parking pass. I was able to receive everything I needed to succeed, and that support made a huge difference in my college experience!”
Would you recommend the Promise Year to high school seniors? Why or why not?
Jacqueline H: “Yes—there’s stability, financial aid, and a variety of opportunities and connections no matter your major. Through this experience, I was able to prove to myself that I’m capable of pursuing higher education.”
Darian A. “Yes, yes, yes! A thousand times yes. So many benefits, it’s too good to pass up.”
Kathia S.: “There's a lot of support—financially, personally, and academically. The program is super helpful throughout the entire process! It's a great opportunity for students who need time and guidance to figure out what they want to do.”
The stories of these students highlight the transformative impact of the Promise Year program. It’s more than just an academic bridge—it’s an opportunity for students who need an alternative route to higher education. If you’re a high school senior wondering if college is within reach, take it from these students: the Promise Year might just be the opportunity you need to turn uncertainty into success.
