Earth Days Award Ceremony Will Honor the 2024 Friends of the Earth: Salem City Councillor Jeff Cohen, the Massachusetts Youth Climate Coalition and student Brielle Laurent

A full schedule of Earth Days events on Day 4 of SSU's celebration culminates in our annual Award Ceremony where we honor student scholarship and bestow three Friend of the Earth awards. This year's winners are Salem City Councillor Jeff Cohen, the Massachusetts Youth Climate Coalition (MYCC) and SSU student Brielle Laurent.

1. Addressing Climate and Environmental Crises through Art and Activism with Katie Pustizzi and Lonnie Stanton
9:25-10:40 am, Charlotte Forten Hall (formerly Viking Hall) Room 123

Through dance and movement, Pustizzi's award-winning dance film "Liquid Spine: Augusta" highlights the environmental and health challenges of the region known as "The Black Triangle" in Sicily due to seaside industry. Stanton will discuss her recent work with Salem State dance students in creating “Restorative Rage"  amplifying the work of Salem Sound Coastwatch.

2. Saving our Shoreline: Resilient Coasts in Salem

10:50 – 11:50 am, ECC Martin Luther King, Jr. Room

Barbara Warren is the Executive Director of Salem Sound Coastwatch and serves as the Lower North Shore Regional Coordinator for the Massachusetts Bays National Estuary Partnership. She will focus on climate awareness, flooding, and coastal resilience.

3. Sustainable Landscape Panel
12:15-1:30 pm, Martin Luther King, Jr. Room

SSU Professors Nick Geron (geography and sustainability) and Lisa Delissio (biology) will discuss their work with the Greening the Gateway City Program and the Sargent Arboretum, respectively. Moderated by the Sustainability Council Interns. 

4. Earth Days Awards Ceremony
5-6:30 pm, Charlotte Forten Hall (formerly Viking Hall) 123

Friend of the Earth Awardees will be honored and will give brief remarks: Salem City Councillor Jeff Cohen, and the Massachusetts Youth Climate Coalition. We will also honor SSU Student Friend of the Earth Brielle Laurent. 

Student research poster contest and creative writing contest winners will receive awards and winners of the writing contest will read their winning entries. Food will be provided. Details forthcoming.
