Information about Salem State University's Test Optional Criteria
Salem State University no longer requires standardized tests scores (SAT/ACT) as part of our admission requirements.*
As part of a growing national movement, eliminating standardized tests from admission requirements allows Salem State to attract more students who are academically qualified based on their high school course selection and GPA, but perhaps did not score well on the SAT/ACT.
By eliminating test score requirements, we will focus our admission decisions on a student’s academic work and grade point average, which research has shown are better predictors for academic success.
*All first year students who are applying into the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) are required to submit SAT/ACT scores.
Test Optional Guidelines
- Applicants who have a GPA of 2.5 or higher are encouraged to submit their test scores (SAT/ACT) as it will assist with academic placement at orientation when registering for classes
- Applicants with a GPA below 2.5 must submit a letter of reference from a teacher or high school guidance counselor
