Viking Spotlight: Linh Nguyen, MAT ESOL '20

Tell us about yourself

My name is Linh Nguyen and I am from Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. I am a graduate student in the master of arts in teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL) program. I would describe myself as both an introvert and an extrovert. I have always enjoyed being by myself but have recently been pushing myself to do things out of my comfort zone. I am a teacher by profession and taught both English and Vietnamese in an international school in Vietnam.

What made you decide to study abroad and choose Salem State University?

Deciding to study abroad is my first step to go outside of my comfort zone. I was in a stable job back home when one of my colleagues asked me if this was where I wanted to be in 10 years.

His comment opened my eyes and pushed me to attend an educational fair in Vietnam where I learned about Salem State and the TESOL program. I chose Salem State not only for the excellent program but also because I was awarded a graduate assistantship which has made this opportunity more affordable for me.

How has Salem State helped you in achieving your goals?

I was chosen as a graduate assistant and this has helped me work with different professors on campus. This position not only has helped me financially but has given me the opportunity to build my experience in the United States. I have also been exposed to several innovative theories and practices of various teaching and assessment styles that will be useful for my future. I have had the opportunity to learn about the American culture and lifestyle, including speaking styles and language skills which will be very beneficial for my teaching when I return to Vietnam.

How do you find the Salem State Community?

The Center for International Education has been the most helpful for me, and the staff members are very supportive, welcoming, and friendly. The professors who I work with have also helped me build my confidence which was something I lacked when I was in Vietnam. I have had the opportunity to make new friends on campus who are from different countries like China, Brazil, Colombia, Kenya and more.

Salem State has many student organizations on campus as well as events in theater, arts, athletics that are fun to attend.  It is easy to travel around campus and access dining and recreational options because of the free transportation available to all students. I recommend the Salem State School of Graduate Studies to all international students who want to advance their careers and earn a master’s degree or graduate certificate!
