Update: Arrest Made in Student Death

Dear Campus Community,

Authorities have arrested an individual charged with shooting our student Carl-Hens Beliard, announced Essex County District Attorney Paul F. Tucker and Salem Police Chief Lucas Miller during a live press conference this evening.

Missael Pena Canela of Salem is charged with Murder in connection with this morning’s shooting of freshman Carl-Hens Beliard in the vicinity of Forest Avenue. Canela was arrested this evening less than 24-hours after the shooting by Salem Police detectives and members of the State Police Detectives Unit. He will be arraigned tomorrow (Thursday) at Salem District Court.

This tragedy continues to be an active and ongoing investigation. This has been a tremendously difficult day for our entire campus community and for those that knew Carl best. I want to take a moment to recognize the efforts of our own University Police, Chief Miller and his officers, and District Attorney Tucker. I am also grateful to our Student Success division and the Human Resources department for their efforts today in supporting our community members.

It is a huge relief to our community to have this arrest made so quickly as our campus is hurting, and I hope brings a moment of comfort to Carl’s family and friends.

Please continue to keep Carl’s family members, friends, classmates, and so many others in your thoughts.

Regards,

John
