SALEM, MASS. – A good stethoscope is a gift from the heart. These ones will last careers and keep a legacy alive.
A collection of 30 custom Littmann Classic III stethoscopes were issued to a class of 30 students starting their first courses as Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing students at Salem State University on Tuesday, the first week of classes under the accelerated summer semester.
The stethoscopes were donated to the students by the MM Trant Foundation, a local non-profit organization honoring the legacy of Mary M. Trant ’21, a Salem State student who passed away unexpectedly in 2021 at the age of 21. Trant, a nursing student who cherished a stethoscope gifted to her by her parents for use during her clinical studies, was on the cusp of completing her education at the time of her death.
The organization, established by the Trant family, honors her legacy by supporting nursing students through scholarships and the donation of Littmann stethoscopes, valued at $100.
“We wish you much success with your nursing education and career,” a card that joins the stethoscope reads. “The compassionate and quality care you provide your patients will change lives for the better!”
The family has also created an endowment with Salem State, with the goal of continuing to support those who pursue nursing careers to care for others with compassion and empathy.
“They wanted to honor their daughter in a way that felt true to the nursing profession, something that their daughter had been passionate about,” said Lori Boudo, director of annual and leadership giving at Salem State. “We’ve been able to achieve that through helping nursing students who may not be able to afford their exams, as well as through the sharing of a deeply personal gift with nurses as they continue their career.”
