Tuesday, September 23

Karate with the Dean – 6:30-8 pm 

Join our class to learn self-defense techniques, enhance self-discipline, and build unshakable self-confidence. This traditional art form will not only strengthen your body but also nourish your mind and soul. Don’t miss this incredible opportunity for personal growth and empowerment. Classes run from September 22nd-December 4th, Tuesdays and Thursdays. 

Wednesday, September 24 

Student Success Fair – 11:30 am–2 pm 

Join us for the Student Success fair this Wednesday!

This is a great opportunity not only to win prizes, but to connect with the following offices: Center for Accessible Academic Resources (CAAR), Language Lab, Accounting Lab, Peer Tutors, Financial Aid, TRIO, Scholarship Committee, Career Services, Student Employment, Writing Center, Information Technology, Navigate, First Year Experience, Exploratory Program, First Generation and the Student Success Center.

Writer Series - Susan Muaddi Darraj – 7:30-9 pm 

Susan Muaddi Darraj is an award-winning writer of books for adults and children. She won an American Book Award, two Arab American Book Awards, and a Maryland State Arts Council Independent Artists Award. In 2018, she was named a USA Artists Ford Fellow. Her books include her linked short story collection, A Curious Land, as well as the Farah Rocks children’s book series. She lives in Baltimore, where she teaches creative writing at Harford Community College and the Johns Hopkins University. Her new novel, Behind You Is the Sea was published in January 2024 by HarperVia. It received praise from The New York Times, The San Francisco Chronicle, and Ms Magazine, and it was named a Best Book of 2024 by The New Yorker and Apple Books. Behind You Is the Sea was also longlisted for the 2025 PEN/Faulkner Award.

Exploratory Fireside Chat – 3:30-4:30 pm 

Join the Exploratory Program for our FIRST Fireside Chat in Forten 123 at 3:30 pm. We will be joined by our Exploratory Advisors from Music and Dance, Criminal Justice, Sport and Movement Science, and World Languages and Cultures. 

Exploratory (undeclared) students - stop by to meet your assigned advisor! This is an excellent opportunity to explore different majors, minors, or courses as we begin the year, open to all students.

Latin American Dance Workshop – 5:30-6 pm

Impress your friends with your moves and get ready for your Baile Inolvidable. Join us to learn the basic steps to Merengue, Salsa and Bachata. This class will be facilitated by dance faculty, Greg Coles.  All are welcome and you do not need to bring a dance partner. 

SSU faculty, staff and students can each bring one guest if interested.

The Presidents and the People 6:30-8 pm 

From John Adams to Richard Nixon, American history contains numerous examples of presidents who attempted to push the boundaries of the Constitution thereby threatening to erode or even destroy our democracy. What can these examples teach us about the power of the presidency and the fragility of democracy in the United States? Join us for a conversation with Professor Corey Brettschneider who will speak about his award-winning book, The Presidents and the People: Five Leaders Who Threatened Democracy and the Citizens Who Fought to Defend It.

Corey Brettschneider is a professor at Brown University, where he teaches constitutional law and politics. He has written for the New York Times, Politico, the Washington Post, and Time, and is the author of the book The Oath and the Office

This event is free and open to the public. It will take place in person and will also be livestreamed on zoom. Registration is required.

Viking Family Weekend – Multiday

Viking Family Weekend is Salem State University’s signature fall event for students and their families to come together and celebrate campus life, Viking pride, and the student experience. From interactive programs and athletic events to relaxing activities and academic showcases, the weekend offers something for everyone. Whether you're joining us for the first time or returning to continue a beloved tradition, you’ll enjoy a variety of events designed to help you connect, explore, and make lasting memories with your student.

We can’t wait to welcome you to campus for a weekend full of community, celebration, and Salem State spirit!

Family Weekend Pickleball – 1-3 pm

Pickleball is one of the fastest-growing sports both on our campus and nationwide. This program will teach families and students the game and allow for friendly competition!

Families visiting for Family Weekend are invited to play, along with all Salem State students.

Competitive Esports Watch Party – 6-9 pm 

Salem State's Overwatch team needs your support as the befin league play! The match will be streamed for the watch party, with snacks and drinks being available to all students.

The intended match time is 7 pm. Any changes to this will be communicated through the SSU Esports Discord and Campus Life and Recreation social media.

Student and Staff Vaccine Clinic

Make an appointment to receive your updated vaccines, right on campus, with Shaw's pharmacy! 

Get vaccinated today by making an appointment.

Counseling and Health services recommends everyone update your annual flu vaccine! Receiving your annual flu vaccine reduces your personal risk for illness and reduces the risk of illness to those in your personal community and in our campus community. Let's protect one another and get vaccinated- No Flu @ SSU!  

Insurance card and photo ID will be required.

Tau Sigma Honor Society Initiation Ceremony – 11:30 am-12:30 pm

Transfer students who have accepted membership into Tau Sigma, the national transfer honor society, will be formally initiated into the organization at this time.

Family members are invited to attend the ceremony, which is occurring as part of Family Weekend.

Music Alumni Recital – 7:30-9 pm 

Salem State music and dance will present music in an alumni recital. 

Performers include: Edward Able, Patrice Benjamin, Michael Benjamin, Daisy Fae, Alexandra Kirby,Steve Lacey, Lydia Lucas, Abrianna Madden,  Molly Madigan, Antanas Meilus, Richard Moore, Rowan Pantaleo, Briana Paquin, and Kevin Turano.

Admission is free. Goodwill offerings at the door are welcome.

Reminder to Pick Up Your Parking Pass

If you ordered a parking pass (faculty, administration, staff, commuter student, resident student) for the 25/26 academic year, please come by the university police station to pick it up. 

Thrive Coaching

SSU is joining Inside Track’s Strive to Thrive program, a three-year initiative to boost student success through evidence-based coaching. Beginning this fall, 100 sophomores in the College of Arts and Sciences will receive personalized outreach and coaching. Learn more about Thrive Coaching
