At Salem State, we know that students thrive when their families and support networks are included in their educational journey. For many of our students, that means making sure important information is available in languages other than English. When Hispanic SSU students were surveyed last spring to ask them about what SSU can do as an HSI-MSI to better support them, almost 70% responded that “it is important for me and my family to have information about the university available in other languages.” The SSU Multilingual Directory is one way to ensure that current and prospective students’ families and supporters can connect meaningfully with our campus, and that family members can be part of their student’s decision making and success.
The multilingual directory, created by HSI-MSI Initiatives, provides a listing of administrative staff who are fluent in Spanish and/or Haitian Kreyòl and are available to speak directly with families and supporters about key aspects of the student experience. Each listing includes the staff member’s contact information, languages spoken, and area(s) of expertise such as admissions, academic advising, student life, and more.

In addition to this directory, we also offer a growing selection of annually updated printed materials in Spanish and Portuguese to help families and supporters access information about admissions, financial aid, transfer processes, new student orientation, and more. These Spanish and Portuguese materials are available online and in the Admissions office.
Together, these resources reflect Salem State’s commitment to servingness by ensuring that students and the people who support them can connect and feel welcomed by our campus community.
Many thanks to our faculty fellow for HSI-MSI Initiatives, Professor Michele Dávila Gonçalves, who has made the SSU Translation Protocol possible, and to our multilingual faculty and staff who are such important members of our community.
