Salem State Alum John Sauvageau Featured in American Association of Geographers "Profiles of Geographers"

John Sauvageau is a veteran,  the Vice President - Senior Branch Channel Market Planner for Citizens Bank, and he is a proud alum of both Salem State's graduate geo-information science (GIS) and undergraduate cartography and GIS programs!

John is featured in the August 2018 edition of American Association of Geographers "Profiles of Geographers" where he credits the start of his successful career path to an exercise in an undergraduate GIS class where he was tasked with identifying the best location for a fire station.  Today, John is responsible for the strategy and planning of Citizen Bank's branch markets throughout the Northeast. He uses GIS technology to analyze and visualize internal and external data to help the bank decide where to locate everything from ATMs to branch banks.

John was already working in banking when he started the graduate geo-information science program at Salem State. It was during this time that he seized an opportunity to bring together his interests in banking and GIS. John recalls, " My branch manager at the time gave me the best advice I had ever received ... He said: 'Look in the organization, try to find somebody doing what you want to do, and just reach out to them and ask if you can talk to them and get advice on: How did you get over here, and what kind of preparation would I need to get into this kind of area within the organization?' So I did that."
