The right fit: A helping hand to a healthcare degree

Marioli Rodriguez ’25 finds her passion

Marioli Rodriguez ’25 began her undergraduate studies at Providence College but decided to transfer to Salem State University her sophomore year for the reduced cost of tuition and to be closer to home. She knew she had made the right decision when she met Professor Amy Everitt, the chair of healthcare studies.

“She was at my transfer advising meeting and provided me with a wealth of information about the healthcare studies major, which is what I was transferring from Providence,” Marioli recalls. “Since then, whenever I’ve needed support in my classes or studies, she’s always been there for me.”

Initially, Marioli was torn between pursuing a career as a healthcare administrator or a practicing clinician. The broad scope of her courses—as well as advice from Professor Everitt—led her to decide on pursuing healthcare administration. “I knew my passion was in healthcare, but I wasn’t sure if I wanted to work directly with patients,” she says. “It was here at Salem State that I discovered I was more interested in developing the leadership and supervisory skills to manage a hospital or clinic.”

She credits Professor Everitt, her courses, and her classmates with helping her realize her career path. “They gave me the tools to make an informed decision about what I wanted to be as well as what I didn’t want to be—which is equally important,” she says. “Salem State provided me with the education and experience I needed to find the path that best reflected my interests.”
