Preparing for Snow and Cold

Jan 22, 2026

With winter weather upon us, we want to share important reminders to help keep our community safe, comfortable, and supported. Cold temperatures and snow can have an impact on our buildings and systems, and how we work together as a community makes a difference for everyone.

Below are some important reminders during the reported extreme cold weather and the anticipated windchills.

  • Keep All Windows Closed-Opening windows can disrupt the heating and steam systems, leading to heat loss and potential damage to these systems and our buildings. By keeping windows closed, it helps us better regulate the temperatures throughout our buildings and reduces the risk of damage to buildings and personal belongings because of frozen or burst pipes.
  • Take Necessary Precautions-If you need to go outside during this time, please take the necessary precautions. Dress warmly, cover any exposed skin, and wear multiple layers. Be sure to wear appropriate footwear when walking outside and use caution when walking on sidewalks and entrances as surfaces may be icy. Allow ample time to get to campus and to travel between classes.
  • Parking Reminders-Ahead of the upcoming snowstorm, we may ask you to relocate your vehicle by 10 pm Saturday to the North Campus Parking Garage to assist with the anticipated snow removal. Additional notifications may come from RAVE, via email, or from your Residence Life staff. Salem Resident Parking Guidelines During Snow Emergencies.
  • Report Concerns-Residential students, if you notice hazardous conditions in a Residence Hall, please report it to your resident life assistant.  Faculty and staff, if a campus room feels too cold or too warm, please submit a work order to Facilities immediately rather than opening a window. Facilities can respond quickly and help regulate the temperature safely and effectively.
  • Additional Support-For residential students, your resident assistants are here to help. If you have questions, concerns, or need assistance during winter weather, please reach out to them. If weather-related challenges are causing stress or concern, campus support resources remain available to you. We encourage faculty and staff to contact Facilities with any concerns and if needed, reach out to Mass4You, the Employee Assistance Program.
  • Potential Closings or Delayed Openings-Please continue to check the website and your SSU emails for any potential closings or delayed openings due to weather. Snow Closing Information.

Living in a shared community means we need to be mindful that our actions can impact those around us. By each of us doing our part, we help ensure the comfort and safety of everyone.
