Maureen McCarthy ’75, ’79G, of North Andover, has been named the 2026 recipient of the Salem State University Alumni Association and Foundation, Inc.’s Elizabeth Williams Wade Award for her many years of service to the university.
McCarthy earned a bachelor's degree in social service from Salem State University in 1975 and returned to earn a graduate degree in reading in 1979. For nearly 15 years, she has served as an active volunteer and advocate for the university.
Most recently, McCarthy spent the last six years as chair and president of the Friends of the McKeown School of Education. During her tenure, she helped strengthen the group’s membership and engagement while implementing a new leadership model designed to support long-term success. She completed her term as chair in June 2026, leaving a strong foundation for future volunteers and leaders.
Beyond her leadership, McCarthy has demonstrated her commitment to Salem State through participation in nearly 80 campus events, countless board and committee meetings and consistent philanthropic support of the university. She has also served with the Alumni Association and the Alumni Association and Foundation Board, helping create meaningful opportunities for alumni engagement.
“Salem State has played an important role in my life, and it has been incredibly rewarding to give back to a community that has given me so much,” she said. “The relationships I’ve built and the opportunity to support future generations of students have made this experience truly meaningful.”
McCarthy previously served as a supervisor in Salem State’s special education master’s degree program, further supporting the university’s educational mission.
“Maureen’s commitment to Salem State has made a lasting impact on our community,” said Mike Mitchell ’07, director of engagement at Salem State. “Through her leadership, volunteer service and continued support, she has strengthened connections across the university. We are proud to honor her with this award.”
