Dr. Erik Champy ’89, ’94G, of Lawrence, has been named the 2023 recipient of Salem State University Alumni Association’s Elizabeth Williams Wade Award for his many years of service to the university.

A dedicated volunteer to Salem State for more than three decades, Champy has stayed connected to his alma mater since graduation and has attended hundreds of events over the years. Previously, he served as the third longest president of the Alumni Association, charter member and former president of the Friends of the McKeown School of Education and member of the Friends of the Graduate School. Dr. Champy is a legacy member of the Salem State University Alumni Association and Foundation, Inc.

“My Salem State degree opened many doors along my journey,” said Champy. “After graduating, I served as an elementary teacher and a middle and high school counselor with a goal of ensuring every child’s potential becomes a reality.”

Champy is passionate about his work as a guidance counselor at Triton Regional High School and currently serves on the National PTA Nomination and Leadership Recruitment Committee and represents the Massachusetts PTA as the diversity, equity and inclusion chair. In addition to serving the Massachusetts Teachers Association as vice president from 2016 until 2018, Champy led as president of the Massachusetts PTA from 2012-2014.

Champy continues his legacy as an advocate for Salem State as an institution, touting the university as a leader in higher education in the region. “This award means so much because I believe in the power of a Salem State education,” said Champy.

Associate Director of Alumni Relations Mike Mitchell ’07 is proud to honor Champy, saying, “He has been an incredible member of the Salem State community and is beyond deserving of this recognition.”
