Helping to pave the way

Marguerite Ortiz ’22 shines a light on the Center for Student Success

From sophomore year through graduation, Marguerite Ortiz ’22 worked at the Bertolon School of Business’ Center for Student Success, helping fellow students navigate college life and persist to graduation. “Those at the Center for Student Success are a shoulder to lean on when it comes to school, classes or personal life—anything that may impact a student’s academic stability,” says Marguerite.

The center’s support services cover everything from understanding general education and credit requirements to helping students find jobs or internships, all while educating students on the basic responsibilities that come along with enrolling in college.

“Having someone, especially another student who is in a similar position, help you while choosing classes and planning for the semesters leading up to graduation helps one understand the process and takes some pressure off.”

In her work, Marguerite often helped her peers gain confidence by putting them in the driver’s seat, which allowed them to take control of their academic planning and anticipate what needed to be done in order to graduate on time.

“And it goes further than just planning and choosing classes, student support services can help explore majors/minors/concentrations, communication with professors, support in career development, finding a job or internship, and much more.”

“It’s so important to understand your responsibilities, and I tried to share my knowledge as fluently as possible to make life a little bit easier for my peers, no matter where they were on their journey.”
