SALEM, MASS. – David Nicastro ’23, of Gloucester, has been named the 2025 recipient of the Salem State University Alumni Association and Foundation, Inc.’s Rising Star Award for his contributions to the community through professional and philanthropic work.
Nicastro is a proud single father of three and U.S. Marine combat veteran. He earned his undergraduate degree in psychology from Salem State University in 2023 and currently serves on the resource team at Amirah, Inc., helping to rehome individuals who have been victims of human trafficking. He also serves as regional director with Genesis Israel, supporting efforts to re-build the bridge between Christians and Israelis. “It is important to me to spend my time resourcefully by helping others overcome the same challenges I once faced,” Nicastro said. “As a proud graduate of Salem State, the work I did here helped me understand how trauma is often passed onto others, unintentionally and unexpectedly. I have carried this knowledge with me throughout my career.”
In addition, Nicastro co-created the “Bridging the Gap” podcast in partnership with his brother, providing a platform for veterans to share their stories of adversity and resilience upon returning home. He also helps facilitate workshops focused on reducing the “22 a day” statistic, which is the estimated number of U.S. veterans who die by suicide or turn to substance abuse or violence as they struggle to acclimate back to civilian life.
“David is a profound thinker, a gracious servant and remarkable human being,” said Mike Mitchell ’07, director of engagement at Salem State. “He exemplifies the talent and dedication that defines a true rising star, making him a deserving recipient of this year’s award.”
