First Year Reading Experience Enters 12th Year

Students, faculty and staff encouraged to vote for Class of 2024 FYRE book

The first year reading experience (FYRE) program at Salem State University is entering its twelfth year this fall and has recently announced the three finalists that the university community is currently considering. The incoming first-year Class of 2024 will be provided a free copy of the book at orientation and asked to return to campus in August ready to discuss it. All faculty, staff, and students have the opportunity to participate in the decision-making process to select the fall 2020 FYRE selection.

The three finalists are:

  • "Parkland: Birth of a Moment" by Dave Cullen
  • "Look Me In The Eye: My Life with Asperger's" by John Elder Robison
  • "Sissy: A Coming-of-Gender Story" by Jacob Tobia

Past First Year Reading Experience selections have included "Listening is an Act of Love: A Celebration of American Life" from the Storycorps Project edited by Dave Isay, "I Am Malala: The Girl Who Stood up for Education and Was Shot by the Taliban"  by Malala Yousafzai, and this past year's selection "The Book of Unknown Americans" by Cristina Henriquez among others. Each selection has helped students not only explore themes that relate to their transition to college but the communities we live in as well.

All faculty, staff, and students are encouraged to cast their vote by Friday, February 28 for the fall 202 selection.
