Ellen Acheampong ’19, of Worcester, has been named the 2026 recipient of the Salem State University Alumni Association and Foundation, Inc.’s Rising Star Award for her professional achievements and service to her community.
Acheampong earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from Salem State in 2019. As an undergraduate she conducted independent research on cilia regeneration and received multiple research grants and awards, including the Kathy Murphy Biology Summer Research Academy Award and the Alfred L. Borgatti Biology Research Award. She presented her findings at campus research conferences and regional honors symposia, gaining valuable experience as a young scientist and researcher.
Beyond the laboratory, Acheampong was actively involved in campus leadership and advocacy. She served as president of the African Student Union and International Student Association and worked as a peer mentor for the Center for International Education, supporting fellow international students as they adjusted to life at Salem State.
Following graduation, Acheampong worked as a research associate at Massachusetts General Hospital, contributing to several immunohistopathology and transplant-related research projects that resulted in scientific publications. She is now a doctoral candidate in immunology at UMass Chan Medical School, where her research focuses on understanding how the immune system responds to infectious disease. Her work contributes to ongoing efforts to advance treatments and improve health outcomes.
“As an immigrant and first-generation college student, education has opened doors I never imagined possible,” Acheampong said. “Salem State provided opportunities that helped shape both my career and my commitment to serving others. I hope my journey encourages young women, immigrants and aspiring scientists to pursue their goals with confidence.”
Beyond her research, Acheampong remains dedicated to supporting underrepresented communities. She currently serves as co-president for the Diversity Interest Group at UMass Chan and has long advocated for international students and immigrants, drawing from her own experiences after moving from the United States to Ghana as a teenager.
“Ellen has already established herself as an emerging leader in scientific research while remaining deeply committed to helping others succeed,” said Mike Mitchell ’07, director of engagement at Salem State. “Her accomplishments, leadership and dedication to community embody the spirit of the Rising Star Award.”
