SALEM, MASS. – A colloquium of choreographers will come together this Saturday and Sunday for the Salem State University Dance Ensemble’s annual fall concert, as students, faculty, and leaders in dance showcase a collection of work that has developed over the course of the semester.
The fall concert will be held this weekend at the Sophia Gordon Center for Creative and Performing Arts, 356 Lafayette St., with two dates scheduled: Saturday, Dec. 13, at 7:30 pm, and Sunday, Dec. 14 at 2 pm. Admission is free, though a suggested donation of $10 at the door in support of the Dance Honor Society is appreciated.
Leading the billing will be “FEELIN’ IT,” an original work led by fall choreographer-in-residence Alfonzo “Megatron” Hunt and supported by the contributions of several students across the semester. Megatron is co-founder of The Floor Lords, one of New England’s original underground Bboy dance crews.
The concert will also include performances by the university’s Hip Hop Dance Ensemble, directed by adjunct faculty member Joanne “Jojo” Caidor, and seven remarkable pieces created by student choreographers under faculty mentorship this fall.
“Participating in Salem Dance Ensemble offers students with a range of experience and dance backgrounds a creative outlet of expression and a platform for sharing their artistry,” said Betsy Miller, associate professor of dance at Salem State. “Student choreographers, mentored by faculty, work throughout the semester, and sometimes for an entire year, on a piece.
“Making art is actually a challenging, messy, vulnerable process with many highs and lows,” Miller continued. “Students who go on that journey not only develop their choreographic craft. They also develop courage—courage to take risks and trust in the process.”
