Each May, the Center for Teaching Innovation (CTI) hosts Salem State's Teaching and Learning Symposium, traditionally held the Wednesday after Commencement. This day-long, conference-style annual event highlights and celebrates teaching and learning innovation, reflection, and connection across disciplines at SSU.

Call for Presentations
Salem State faculty and staff are invited to share success stories, challenges, and emerging topics of interest they have encountered over the past academic year in teaching and learning contexts at SSU. You might consider work you have taken up in your own courses, initiatives your offices and centers have prioritized this past academic year to support teaching and learning, emerging ideas and approaches that excite you, topics you would like to introduce, discuss, and amplify across campus.
Suggested Presentation Topics
- Examples of creative and innovative course design, activities, and assignments
- Assessment contexts (assignment design, feedback, etc.)
- Accessibility-minded and inclusive teaching practices
- Considerations of literacies (reading literacies, research literacies, disciplinary literacies)
- Approaches to classroom dialogue, advising, and relationship-building
- Online teaching course contexts and best practices
- Digital pedagogy approaches and uses of digital tools
- Collaborative and project-based learning contexts, including experiential learning, community engagement, COIL, and mentored research
- Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) projects and collaborations
- Belonging, servingness, and HSI/MSI-related initiatives

Session Formats
- Lightning Talks (3 minutes): Fast-paced presentations from one presenter, intended to spark new conversations and collaborations across disciplines. Participants may share one or two images, or a brief number of questions/bullet points.
- Take Ten Talks (10 minutes): Brief, informative presentations by individuals or co-presenters. Visual aids, such as presentation slides, are encouraged.
- Poster Presentations: Displayed during the poster session, an opportunity for informal conversation and dialogue between poster creators and Symposium attendees. Printing cost will be covered by CTI.
*NEW* Workshops (45 minutes): Faculty- and/or staff-led workshops designed to learn, inspire, and connect colleagues.
We are happy to offer time in this year's Symposium schedule for faculty and staff to lead workshops related to teaching and learning at SSU. CTI is particularly interested in workshops that have interactive, hands-on, and participatory elements that enable attendees to connect with one another and to apply ideas to their own work at SSU. We invite topics that resonate across teaching contexts on campus and are are applicable to a range of courses and teaching/learning approaches.
Multiple facilitators are encouraged, and interdisciplinary approaches are welcome! Please note that workshop sessions will be held in-person in the morning (10-11am), and schedule time is limited.
Proposal Guidelines
Proposals for talks and posters will include session the presentation title and an abstract (150-300 words) that describes the topic, purpose, and main takeaways.
Workshop proposals will include the session title, proposed agenda or outline of the session, and 1-3 learning objectives.
Proposal Submission Deadline
Submit your proposal via the 2026 Teaching and Learning Symposium submission form by Friday, March 13. After the submission deadline, CTI will email you with next steps by and relevant details by Friday, April 10.
