Accepting Nominations for the 2022 Salem State University Martin Luther King Jr. Leadership Award

The Salem State University Martin Luther King Jr. Leadership Award is given annually to a Salem State student, alumna/us, faculty member, staff member, or administrator for their outstanding and significant contributions to the cause of social justice, peace, and equality.

Nomination deadline: January 26, 2022.

Nomination Criteria

The recipient’s actions and behaviors in working either on or off-campus for the betterment of the community should be in a manner consistent with the legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. These contributions can include the areas of education, diversity, race relations, social justice, or economic empowerment. Written nominations must explicitly address how the nominee has visibly demonstrated:

  • Courage and conviction in valuing differences
  • Commitment to “seeing beyond borders” by building inclusions
  • Acceptance of challenge and risk in achieving goals for the greater good
  • Compassion for humanity

Information for the Nominees

Nominees will be notified and provided with an opportunity to submit a letter in support of their nominations.  Details of their own work and contributions will be considered for the award. The Salem State community is encouraged to nominate any person they see fit for the award. Any SSU community member is also welcome to self-nominate.

Those nominated will be notified by January 27, 2022. They will be sent a form to fill out, in which they can detail how they have demonstrated leadership, community service/experiences, and the principles of Dr. King. 

Announcing the Salem State University Martin Luther King Jr. Leadership Award Winners

The Martin Luther King, Jr. and Black History Month 2022 Collaborative Committee will review the forms and deliberate before announcing and recognizing the winners in the categories of student, staff, faculty, and alumna/us at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Convocation and Keynote. Dates for the keynote and MLK events will be announced in coming weeks.
