Green Spaces
Salt Marsh
The salt marsh, located behind Marsh Hall and Atlantic Hall, is bordered by a bike path and includes a baseball field and park. Students can take a stroll down the bike path and observe different migratory bird species. The marsh protects the campus shoreline from erosion by buffering wave action and trapping sediments. It also reduces flooding by slowing and absorbing rainwater, protects water quality by filtering runoff and produces food at the start of the marine food chain.
Community Garden
Students can grow flowers and other plants for fun and to relieve stress in several garden beds near the Sullivan building.
Quads
Students use several open lawns across campus to play Frisbee and wiffle ball, hula-hoop, study, sunbathe, and relax. The quads also provide a sense of community for commuters and on-campus students.
Greenhouse
On the fifth floor of Meier Hall is a greenhouse run by the biology department and staffed by students. The greenhouse is used for botany, marine botany, and research experiments. Even a few teachers use the greenhouse to start their vegetables in the spring. Twice a year, the biology department holds a plant sale that sells the plants growing in the greenhouse. The profits from the sale pay for all of the expenses for the greenhouse except for heat, water, and electricity.
Nearby Parks
South campus is bordered by the Forest River Conservation Area. The conservation area's 1.5 mile trail loop is a great place to hike and get away from the sounds of the city.
