Kallyn Lavallee - "My artwork is fueled by my own critiques of faith and religion. The concept of sinning, rituals, and sacrifice all make me question how religion plays a vital role in society and how religion can also be used for evil. Why do we have a longing for there to be a life after this one?"

Safiya Tarbell - "During a family get-together I noticed the women working alongside each other to create a beautiful meal for everyone to enjoy. After everyone ate, they once again joined forces to clean the dishes, each taking on a different role in the process. I found myself both saddened and in awe of this. As the women worked the men spent the time playing games and drinking. Observing the women acting in their expected roles, I felt disappointment while at the same time experienced admiration for the beauty of their community with one another. They were laughing, singing, telling stories, all while working together to finish the dishes. Reflecting on this I have come to understand that there are both beauty and tragedy in the female experience. Within my work, I seek to capture this idea using animal imagery as an allegory for how women are perceived. I've also integrated imagery of Lilith within my work, a powerful, independent feminist figure symbolizing womankind's resistance of control and subjugation. The pieces in this exhibition reflect how my own experiences inform my understanding of the beauty and tragedy that results from living as a woman in a patriarchal society."

The Winfisky Gallery is open Monday through Friday from 10 am - 4 pm.
