Reporting has never been without risk, but the nature of that risk is changing. From harassment and surveillance to trauma, burnout, legal threats, and physical violence, journalists are increasingly asked to navigate a range of dangers simply to do their jobs. What do we rarely see or consider about what it takes to produce the news we consume every day? Join the Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies for a talk by Dr. Lauren Walsh (NYU), who will look beyond the headlines to examine the risks and threats journalists face—and the human cost of gathering the news.
Dr. Lauren Walsh teaches at New York University, where she is the Founding Director of the Gallatin Photojournalism Intensive. She has served as Managing Director of Journalist Safety Initiatives with the James Foley Foundation where she led the Reporting with Resilience project. She is the author of multiple books, including Conversations on Conflict Photography and Through the Lens: The Pandemic and Black Lives Matter, and has published widely on photojournalism, moral injury, war crimes, censorship, and visual ethics.
This event is free and open to the public.
