The Holocaust By Bullets in Central and Eastern Europe:

Feb 05
A Workshop for High School Teachers

More than 1 million Jewish men, women and children and thousands of other non-Jewish victims targeted during the Holocaust were murdered in fields, forests, and ravines in the former Soviet Union and other countries of Central and Eastern Europe. Between 1941 and 1944, entire Jewish communities were slaughtered in mass shootings perpetrated by the Einsatzgruppen, specialized “mobile killing units” that operated in the rear-operating areas of the Wehrmacht, and buried in mass graves. CHGS and Yahad – In Unum staff will present a full-day workshop at Salem State University for high school teachers to learn more about this often forgotten but essential chapter of Holocaust history and to hear the voices of those who witnessed it.

During the workshop, participants will

  • Learn about Jewish communities in the pre-war Soviet Union.
  • Learn about the key elements of the Holocaust by Bullets.
  • Learn about Yahad – In Unum’s investigative methodology of research and field work.
  • Discover the range of primary source materials central to Yahad – In Unum’s work.
  • Investigate in depth excerpts from the archives and from the eyewitness testimonies and learn how they can be used to enhance student critical thinking skills.

School districts wishing to send teams of teachers as well as individual teachers wishing to learn more about the workshop, associated fees, and to reserve a spot should contact us at chgs@salemstate.edu.
