Please join us on Wednesday, November 19, 2025, at 4:30pm to celebrate GIS Day at Salem State University, part of Geography Awareness Week, with a humanitarian map 'hackathon' and guest speaker Abby Hardy-Moss, Vice President of Stewardship, Planning & Technology at Greenbelt, Essex County's Land Trust.
The humanitarian map hackathon is an opportunity to engage in hands-on assistance in the creation of mapping data needed for responding to disasters around the world. This event will use the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap online platform to address data needs for the catastrophic flooding that hit Kumamoto, Japan in August 2025. Participants will be trained on how to utilize satellite imagery to do the mapping, either on your own laptop or on provided computers. No experience or equipment required!
After the map hackathon, pizza will be provided.
Our guest speaker will be Abby Hardy-Moss, Vice President of Stewardship, Planning & Technology at Greenbelt, Essex County's Land Trust. Abby uses geospatial technology to connect people to nature and embed science into Greenbelt’s conservation work. Abby leads Greenbelt’s collaborations with municipalities and non-profits on open space mapping and guides the organization’s climate resilience planning efforts.
This event is organized in collaboration with the Geographical Society.
