What About the Second Amendment? Firearm Safety in Divisive Times

Workshop description:

This workshop is intended to educate participants on the role of firearms in suicidal crises, as well as their prevalence domestically.

Participants will learn about the basic components of handguns and long guns and common options for firearm storage.

Additionally, participants will learn about relevant laws and policies regarding firearm safety and storage.

Afterwards, participants will learn how to provide Lethal Means Safety Counseling through Motivational Interviewing techniques. This technique can be used to engage others in discussions related to safe firearm storage in a constructive manner.

This workshop is intended to educate participants on the role of firearms in suicidal crises, as well as their prevalence domestically.

Who should attend:

Social workers, child welfare workers, gerontologists, mental health counselors, firearm owners, emergency medical workers, crisis intervention professionals, educators, criminal justice professionals, law enforcement workers.

Our Presenter:

Dr. Chris Collins is an Assistant Professor in the School of Social Work at Salem State University. Dr. Collins earned his PhD in Social Work from Florida State University. Additionally, he holds an MSW and BSW from Florida State University. Dr. Collins is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker in Massachusetts and a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in Florida. He has 10-years of clinical experience and has worked in child welfare, victim advocacy, acute mental health, and private practice. Dr. Collins’ research is concerned with reducing firearm-related harms caused by the unsafe storage of firearms. Recently, he developed the Engaging in Lethal Means Safety training program – a theoretically driven, empirically support intervention aimed at equipping mental healthcare workers with the skills necessary to successful discuss firearm storage opportunities with their clients.
