Things to do in Salem

Salem State is in the vibrant city of Salem, where there is always something to do. While you're here, we encourage you to spend time exploring the city. Salem has everything from history (the Salem Witch Trials and Nathaniel Hawthorne's famous House of the Seven Gables) and one-of-a-kind restaurants to quirky shops of every description.

Essex Street Pedestrian Mall 

This Historic cobblestone-and-brick street is likely what comes to mind when you think 'Salem.' The Essex Street Pedestrian Mall is one of the most buzzing areas of downtown and features countless shops, cafés, and eateries. Here, you'll understand what we mean when we say Salem is a hip, historic city.  

The Witch House 

This iconic downtown destination, home to witch trials judge Jonathan Corwin, is the only standing structure in Salem with direct ties to the witch trials. 

Peabody Essex Museum 

The Peabody Essex Museum (PEM) is the oldest continuously operating and collecting museum in the United States. Each year, the PEM welcomes several world-renowned exhibits. Once you get your ClipperCard, you can visit the PEM for free.  

Pickering Wharf 

At the Pickering Wharf, you'll find many shops, restaurants, and The Friendship, a reconstruction of a ship that came to Salem in 1797. This represents just one of the numerous ways in which Salem played a part in America's early years.
