Yom HaShoah Tribute
In the United States, the tradition of Holocaust Remembrance week started in 1979 under the directive of President Jimmy Carter when the Senate and Congress recognized the need to acknowledge the memory of the Holocaust and its victims. As a result, Congress created the U.S. Memorial Council and instituted the week of Yom HaShoah as the “Days of Remembrance of the Victims of the Holocaust.”

The Holocaust Remembrance Ceremony held by the Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies is the largest continuous commemoration ceremony north of Boston. The annual ceremony provides a space for relatives, friends, and community members to honor the memory of those who perished in the Holocaust and those who survived its horrors.
This year’s program will feature a memorial service, traditional songs performed by the Salem State Community Chorus, and a talk by Holocaust survivor Dr. Miriam Klein Kassenoff.
Dr. Miriam Klein Kassenoff fled Kosice, Slovakia as a small child in 1941 via Lisbon, Portugal with her parents and infant brother, the late Federal Honorable Judge Ted Klein. She is the founding Director of the Teacher Institute on Holocaust Studies for the University of Miami’s School of Education. Dr. Klein Kassenoff has written and lectured on an array of Holocaust topics, including “Women in the Holocaust” and “Literature of the Holocaust.” As the Education Specialist for Holocaust Studies for Miami-Dade County Public Schools, she is responsible for all staff development and Holocaust teacher training for Miami-Dade County’s Public Schools.

The Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies at Salem State University was formed in 2014 to carry on the mission of the Holocaust Center, Boston North. The Yom Hashoah ceremony continues the tradition started by its founders, Harriet Wacks and Holocaust survivor Sonia Weitz.
