Salem State Athletics statement on COVID-19 response

This afternoon the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) issued a statement announcing that all athletic activities are suspended indefinitely as we continue to monitor and assess COVID-19. While we understand the news is extremely disappointing for our student-athletes, Viking families, and fans, Salem State University holds the well-being and safety of our community as its highest priority. This is a quickly evolving and unprecedented situation, and we will continue to monitor and share developments.

The MASCAC statement can be found here.

A few important details:

Stated in the MASCAC Statement "Athletic activities" includes all team meetings, practices, and games. Salem State University students should continue to follow university protocol of events no larger than 24 people in attendance. Coaches will work with Athletic Training staff to send sport-specific strength and conditioning guidance for student-athletes to do on their own.

The NCAA has granted a blanket waiver for all Spring student-athletes. Therefore no spring student-athlete will be charged with using a year of eligibility. Additional information related to eligibility will be sent from Athletics in the near future.

As usual, we are extremely proud of our student-athletes and coaches for their leadership and resilience during this challenging time. We will continue to work with our campus and conference leadership to provide any further updates and information.

We know there will be many questions regarding this situation and its impact. Please feel free to reach out to Interim Director of Athletics Nicolle Wood at All student-athletes are reminded to continue to check their SSU emails for communication from the university.

With Viking Pride,

Nicolle Wood
Interim Director of Athletics
