The First Year Experience office is excited to announce the 2019–2020 First Year Reading Experience selection. After a campus-wide vote, the book selected for the incoming Class of 2023 to read is "The Book of Unknown Americans" by Christina Henríquez.
A powerful novel addressing themes of love, family, economic hardship, bigotry, and immigration "The Book of Unknown Americans" was named one of Amazon's Best Books of 2014, the 2014 novel of the year by The Daily Beast, and an NPR Great Read among other accolades. Henríquez challenges us to consider what it means to be American as highlighted in the love story of two young people.
A committee of faculty, staff, and students spent the last six months reviewing book nominations and finally selecting three semi-finalists which were presented to the university community for consideration.
First-year students will receive a free copy of the book at orientation and participate in discussion groups with faculty, administrators, upperclass students on the day before classes start in the fall.
Faculty, staff and administrators who would like to serve as facilitators can sign up online.
This will be the 11th year of the First Year Reading Experience program at Salem State University. Previous selections can be found on the Salem State website.
