As the largest student employer at the university, residence life offers a variety of opportunities for students. Whether it's serving as a resident assistant, working the summer maintenance crew, staffing the front desks, or mentoring first-year students, working in residence life is an opportunity to help pay your tuition while getting more involved in the campus community. Residence Life Positions for Students

  • Desk Receptionist

    Peabody, Bowditch, Marsh, and Atlantic Halls staff a desk receptionist (DR) 24 hours a day, seven days a week, while school is in session. DRs help to build community by creating a welcoming environment, greeting students as they enter the halls. These student staff members can field resident concerns while providing safety and security. DRs enforce a strict residential guest policy to ensure that access is only granted to residents of the hall. Students selected to serve as DRs participate in intensive training, and are highly qualified to provide support and guidance to residents. 

    Each desk mentioned above maintains a desk supervisor, who assists with organizing the desk schedule and overseeing general functions of the desk

  • Graduate Resident Director

    This is a 12-month live-in position that requires evening and weekend hours, on-call duty rotation responsibilities, 20 weekly office hours and attendance at evening commitments. Works collaboratively with the area coordinator in the daily management and development of a residence program that fosters an environment that is conducive to personal, academic, and social growth. Principal duties include staff supervision, student/community development, management of discipline and facilities management, serving as a hearing officer, and participating in departmental projects such as staff selection and training and other duties assigned by the director of residence life or designee.

    Graduate Resident Director Job Descrpition

  • Hall Raisers

    Hall raisers are undergraduate students selected and trained to help incoming first-year and returning students as they move into the residence halls and ensure that their first few days at Salem State are enjoyable. They assist the residence life staff with opening of the halls, move-in, first day events, and other tasks. In exchange, students get to move in early for free, receive a T-shirt, and gain outstanding leadership experience. We are looking for at least 100 students to serve as hall raisers.

    The ideal hall raiser possesses knowledge of campus services and resources, has a positive attitude and energetic nature, and is committed to helping students smoothly transition to college.   

  • Office Assistant

    Office assistants (OA) are undergraduate students who work in the various offices in residence life and assist with answering phones, performing administrative tasks, delivering materials to other offices, etc. Office assistants who are assigned to a resident director's office or the Bates Area office MUST have work study. There are a limited number of non-work study office assistants hired for the residence life central office.

  • Resident Assistant (RA)

    All of our residential areas on campus have resident assistants (RA) who work with the students who reside on that floor, pod or entryway. No matter where on campus you live, you can be sure there is always an RA nearby to assist you. In Bowditch and Peabody Halls, each floor has at least one RA and some floors have two. Floors without a second RA typically have the presence of an academic mentor.

    Resident assistants promote community, answer questions about the university and campus life, plan social and educational events, assist with roommate/apartment concerns, and help residents feel welcome at Salem State. Students selected to serve as resident assistants participate in several weeks of intensive training, and are highly qualified to provide support and guidance to residents.

  • Summer Conference Assistant

    Summer Conference Assistants (SCA) are undergraduate students who live on campus throughout the summer and assist residence life summer students and conference guests. SCA responsibilities include coordinating check-in and check-out procedures throughout the summer, distributing keys, staffing a 24-hour security desk, and working on special projects within residence life.

    SCAs are housed in Marsh and Atlantic Halls throughout the summer, where they aid with orientation, Student Academic Support Services Summer Program, Upward Bound, a variety of conference guests, and summer students. SCAs are paid hourly for 20-35 hours per week, serve on duty during weekdays, and develop bulletin boards and basic programming for their areas. In exchange, summer conference assistants receive a space on campus and a partial meal plan for the summer.

  • Summer Maintenance Assistants and Supervisors

    Summer Maintenance Assistants (SMA) are undergraduate students that live on campus throughout the summer and assist residence life by preparing buildings and performing maintenance work. SMA responsibilities include painting, sweeping and mopping, moving furniture, washing walls, replacing lights, and other tasks as assigned. We also hire maintenance supervisors to oversee the SMA staff, coordinate their schedule, and ensure that all projects are completed appropriately.

    Housing will be determined based on when residence halls are open and will require moving throughout the summer. These moves allow us to be sure all areas are ready to be occupied for the fall.
