Pi Mu Epsilon Induction Ceremony

Guest Speaker Rachelle DeCoste

Please join us for the induction of nine new members to Pi Mu Epsilon, an honor society for mathematics. In addition, we will be welcoming a guest speaker, Dr. Rachelle DeCoste from Wheaton College, who will be giving a talk entitled, `What is the Shape of Space?'.

Talk Abstract

How does an ant crawling on a surface know whether it lives on a sphere, a flat plane, a cylinder, or any other space? Similarly, how do we know what the shape of our universe is? In this talk we will explore various options for the shape of a space and determine (together!) how we might investigate our space to draw conclusions about its shape.  Come prepared to think, draw and engage in mathematics.
