Earth Days Events for Tuesday, April 11th

Salem State's Earth Days celebration lasts all week from Monday, April 10-Friday, 14, 2023. The theme this year is Climate Crises: Actions for a Just and Livable World. All events are free and open to the public. Most events occur in the Ellison Campus Center Martin Luther King Jr. room on the second floor. See the SSU Campus Map

Highlights for Tuesday April 11 include a conversation with Berry IOP Fellow Eugenia Gibbons on Climate Smart Healthcare, a showing of the film Stopping the Peabody Peaker Plant, an opportunity to view rooftop solar panels and participate in a ribbon-cutting to celebrate SSU's continuing commitment to solar energy, a kite flying demonstration of climate change-themed kites, and a chance to join a group bike ride on the bike path from campus to downtown. FILM: Stopping the Peabody Peaker Plant

The film highlights local activists' push to shut down a new 55-megawatt fossil fuel “peaker” plant being built in Peabody, MA. Post-film Q&A with filmmaker Stephen Andrada and activists Susan Smoller, Leader of Breathe Clean North Shore, and Lilly Worthly, Massachusetts Climate Action Network.

Solar Panel Ribbon-Cutting

Celebrate Salem State's two newest rooftop solar arrays on Meier Hall (121 KW) and on O'Keefe Athletic Center (245 KW, adding to existing panels on both O'Keefe and Gassett). Remarks by Vice President for Student Success Nate Bryant and others. Opportunities to view solar panels from Meier Hall rooftop at 1 pm and 2 pm.


2:30-3:30 pm, North Campus Quad; also on Friday April 14 at the same time

Kite Flying Exhibition

Students from SSU Form+Design classes will fly the climate change-themed kites they have created


4:30-5:30 pm, Bluebike Hub along bike path on Central Campus; rain date is Wednesday April 12, same time and location

Bike Ride from Campus to and from downtown on the bike path

Led by the City of Salem Bicycling & Shared Path Advisory Committee. Bring your own bike or rent a Bluebike while supplies last.
