Summer 2019 Financial Aid Information
Summer 2019 financial aid applications are available in Ask The Viking.
You must be a matriculated (fully admitted degree-seeking) student by May 1, 2019 to apply for summer financial aid.
You must have a 2018-2019 FAFSA on file with Salem State University.
Please be sure that the Salem State University school code #002188 on your FAFSA.
If you wish to know your aid eligibility before the summer semester begins then your FAFSA file must be complete by April 4.
Available Financial Aid
Summer Stafford Loan awards will be determined by your remaining Stafford Loan eligibility from the 2018-19 school year.
If you have Stafford Loan eligibility, you must enroll in a minimum of six credits.
Summer Pell Grant is available to all Pell eligible students; federal rules apply.
Emergency loans and book advances are not available in the summer.
Financial aid funds are earned based upon days of attendance. Students not completing their summer courses will have their eligibility recalculated according to Federal Return of Title IV policy after classes have concluded - leaving you responsible for any remaining balance for your classes.
If you change your enrollment, OR you do not attend, OR do not complete a registered course, then your aid will be adjusted and you will likely owe a balance. Summer aid revisions continue to take place even AFTER the summer session ends.
Satisfactory Academic Progress
Summer financial aid awards are processed before spring 2019 grades are posted. Thus, if you are academically dismissed, or are not making satisfactory academic progress at the end of spring 2019, you will not be eligible for summer 2019 financial aid, even if you had already been awarded summer financial aid.
If you are on academic warning at the end of the spring 2019, and you take summer courses:
- SUMMER 2019 TERM and CUM GPA must be at least 2.0 at the end of summer for an undergraduate student, or 3.0 for a graduate student.
- SUMMER 2019 TERM and CUM completion rate must be at, or above, 66% at the end of summer.
Failure to achieve those requirements: will result in Academic Probation and the loss of your financial aid for fall semester.
If you are on ACADEMIC PROBATION at the end of the spring 2019, and you take summer courses:
- You must have completed an academic contract for summer with academic advising
- SUMMER 2019 TERM GPA must be at, or above, for an undergraduate student, or 3.0 for a graduate student.
- SUMMER 2019 TERM completion rate must be at, or above, 67% at the end of summer.
Failure to achieve those requirements: will result in contract violation and the loss of your financial aid eligibility at Salem State and may result in dismissal from the university.
Please Note: Due to their shortened length, summer courses can be very rigorous and can very easily impact student academic standing. If you are on warning or on probation, it is strongly suggested you discuss your plan for summer enrollment with an academic advisor.
